EXAM  REQUIREMENTS

STUDENT TEACHER
AFFILIATE (Pre-Bronze)

Candidates, must be 16 years of age or over. Successful candidates gain no qualifications in the Association, may not vote and may not advertise as a member, but are permitted to attend meetings.
The examination consists of three parts: history, demonstration and theory.

Historical Section

Candidates will be expected to discuss the history of the development of Argentine Tango.

Practical Demonstration

 

  1. Candidates will be required to dance as a man and as a woman with a partner to music: Tango, Milonga, Vals Cruzado and Pecho Argentino (Specified patterns or components only).

  2. Candidates will be required to dance an improvisation in the four dances according to his or her role.


Theory (Oral Examination)

Candidates will be expected to give:

  1. A simple application of:
    Time, Tempo and Rhythms of each dance, counting in Beats, counting in Rhythm, Holds, Embraces, various Dance Positions, Lead and Follow, and to give some Precede and Follow for each specific pattern or their components.

  2. A brief definition of the following terms:
    Feet Position, Direction of the Feet, Alignment and Direction, Amount of Turn, Footwork, Rise and Fall, Body rise, Contra Body Motion, Contrary Body Movement Position (of the feet), Side leading, Sway and Swing.

  3. A definition of Posture, Poise and Frame.

  4. A localization of COG (Center of Gravity) COL (Center of Levity) COE (Center of Equilibrium)

  5. Differentiation between Motion and Locomotion.

  6. A general explanation of Body Mechanics of Elements and Principle of Components

  7. An understanding of Balance and Stability.

  8. A simple description of, Forward and Backward Walks, Weight Distribution, Difference between Negative, Neutral, and Positive Walks, Application of Stepping, Walking, and Marching.

  9. A general comprehension of melodic line and rhythmic line, and Up and Down Beat.

  10. A technical analysis and solo demonstration of the specified patterns or their components as a man and a woman accompanied by a suggested rhythm.

Associate

 

ASSOCIATE (Bronze)

Candidates must be 18 years of age or over.
The examination consists of three parts: history, demonstration and theory.

Historical Section

Candidates will be expected to discuss the history of the development of Argentine Tango.

Practical Demonstration

Candidates will be required to:

  1. Show average ability to dance as a man and as a woman with partner the four dances. Any suitable bronze pattern or their components may be danced.

  2. Candidates will be required to dance an improvisation in the four dances according to his or her role.

  3. Dance solo to music as man or a woman any specific pattern or their components in the four dances.

  4. Start an imaginary class to music.


Theory

Candidate will be required to:

  1. Demonstrate the application of: Time, Tempo and Rhythms of each dance, counting in Beats, counting in Rhythm, counting in Beats and Bars, Beat Value, Various Syncopations, Holds, Three segments of the embrace, various Dance Positions, Lead and Follow, and to give some Precede and Follow for each specified pattern or their components.

  2. To demonstrate understanding of the following technical terms:
    Feet Position, Direction of the Feet, Alignment and Direction, Amount of Turn, Inversion and Eversion, Footwork, Rise and Fall, Body Rise, Sways (Side Sway, Forward Sway, Rotational Sway, Broken Sway, Change of Sway, Oversway), Swing (Body and Legs), Contra Body Movement, Contrary Body Movement Position (of the Feet), Side Leading, Lead and Follow, Description of specific pattern and their components, Some Precedes and Follows to each specific pattern or their components.

  3. A definition of posture, poise, stance, frame, shape and stretch

  4. Localize: COG (Center of Gravity) COL (Center of Levity) COE (Center of Equilibrium) CPB (Center Point of Balance). And the use of the Emotional Center of the Body.

  5. Differentiate and Apply Motion and Locomotion.

  6. Give a detailed explanation of Body Mechanics of Elements and Principle of Components

  7. Explain the development of Balance and Stability.

  8. A complete description of, Forward and Backward Walks, Difference between Negative, Neutral ,and Positive Walks, Application of Stepping, Walking, and Marching. Establishing Position and Direction, and Body Elevation.

  9. To demonstrate a comprehension of melodic line and rhythmic line, music and musicality.

  10. Explain Orientation and navigation.

  11. To give a technical analysis and solo demonstration of the specified pattern or components as a man and a woman accompanied by a suggested rhythm.

  12. Answer simple questions on class teaching methods.

Licentiate

LICENTIATE (Silver)

Candidates must be 21 years of age or over and have occupied a responsible position as a teacher of dancing for the last two years.
Historical Section As In Associate
Candidates will be expected to discuss the history of the development of Argentine Tango.

Practical Demonstration

1,2,3 as Associate. The standard of dancing and depth of knowledge must be of a good quality.

Theory

Candidates will be required to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of all material in Associate (Bronze) Syllabus plus the Licentiate (Silver) Syllabus and Precedes and Follows. The standard of dancing and depth of knowledge must be of good quality.

  2. Explanation of turns : (Inside and Outside), Natural and Reverse Movement, Rotation, Pivot, Pivoting Action, Reverse Pivot, Toe Pivot, Heel Pivot, Heel Turn, Heel Close, Heel Pull, Foot Swivel, Frictional Force, Foot Pressure, Acceleration and Deceleration.

  3. Show practical methods of teaching any dance or specified patterns or their components selected by the examiner from the Syllabus.


Specified Patterns

 

Fellow

 

FELLOW (Gold)

Candidates must have held the Licentiate Degree for at least three years.
Requirements are as follows:

  1. All work included in the Associate (Bronze) and Licentiate (Silver) examinations.

  2. Demonstrate knowledge of all material included in Gold Syllabus (Specified Patterns or their components). The standard of dancing and depth of knowledge must be of high quality.

  3. An understanding of different heights of the body, Velocity and Amplitude, Centrifugal and Centripetal Forces, Gravity, Inertia. Momentum (linear, angular, rotational), Net Force, Balance (Static, Dynamic, Kinetic) Association and De-association, Body Torque & Torsion, Body Flight, Body Speed, Leg Speed, Contra-Spinal, Ascendant and Descendant Curve, Phases of a Step, All Types of Syncopation. A Solid Musical Foundation.


Specified Patterns

Master


 

 

MASTER (Degree)

Candidates must have held the Fellow Degree for at least three years.
Requirements are as follows:

  1. All work included in the Associate (Bronze), Licentiate (Silver), and Fellow (Gold) examinations.

  2. Demonstrate knowledge of all material included in all Syllabi. The standard of dancing and depth of knowledge must be of superior quality.

  3. Knowledge of: Anatomy, Kinesiology, Physics of Dance, Application of Biomechanical Musculoskeletal Leverage Physics.

  4. Technique of control of body and mind.
